Atlantic Jackknife Clam
The Atlantic Jackknife Clam is often known as a bamboo clam or razor clam because of its shape, and it can have sharp edges. It is found along the Atlantic Coast from Canada to our home, South Carolina. The shells are often found along the shoreline or can be found further up in the dry sand. You have found the correct shell; the color usually is a brown-green color and is flat like a shell. Just be sure to watch your step as if you step on one; it can hurt a little if you do.
Lettered Olive
The Lettered Olive has been the state shell for South Carolina since 1984 since it’s one of the shells you will find on the coast of South Carolina. It’s an easy shell to spot as it’s known for its smooth, shiny, and cylinder share, and it’s a brown color. You will find most will make beautiful jewelry with this shell since it’s such a beautiful shell that you’ll spot in the area.
Whelks
Another shell that you’ll find familiar on the South Carolina shoreline is Whelks. These shells many people often mistake as being conch shells. Whelks are beautiful shells, and to help identify them, you’ll find them with a spiral pattern on them but in many different sizes. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t see a large one, as they are still an excellent shell to add to your collection at home!
Banded Tulips
Banded Tulips is another shell that you will find along the east coast shorelines. You’ll be able to locate these shells as they have around 7 to 11 purple/brown spiral lines along with 5-6 maroon spiral lines. Banded Tulips are also smooth shells around 2 ½ – 3 inches long and would make a great addition to your shell collection at home.
